What is SIJ Dysfunction?
SIJ Dysfunction refers to an issue or a condition that affects the sacroiliac joint (SIJ), which is the joint between the sacrum (the triangular bone at the base of the spine) and the ilium (the large, wing-shaped bone that forms the upper part of the pelvis).
SIJ Dysfunction can occur when the joint becomes too mobile(hypermobile) or too stiff, leading to pain and discomfort in the lower back, hips, and legs. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including trauma, pregnancy, arthritis, or repetitive stress injuries.
The most common symptoms of SIJ Dysfunction include sharp pain in the lower back, buttocks, and hips, as well as stiffness and difficulty walking or standing. Conservative treatment options include physical therapy and /or chiropractic adjustments is the first line of treatment.Your therapist will be following a 3 step process to assess, evaluate and alleviate any persistent or severe pain in the lower back or hips to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment.
What are the causes of SIJ Dysfunction?
The causes of SIJ dysfunction can vary, but generally, the condition is caused by either too much movement (hypermobility) or too little movement (hypomobility) in the joint. Some of the common causes of SIJ Dysfunction include:
Trauma: Any direct injury or trauma to the lower back, such as a fall or car accident, can cause SIJ Dysfunction.
Pregnancy: During pregnancy, hormonal changes can cause the ligaments in the body to relax, which can lead to an increase in mobility in the SI joint, resulting in SIJ Dysfunction.
Arthritis: Arthritis can cause inflammation and pain in the SI joint, leading to dysfunction.
Repetitive stress injuries: Activities that require repetitive twisting or bending of the lower back, such as prolonged sitting, can cause SIJ Dysfunction.
Leg length discrepancy: A difference in the length of the legs can lead to an imbalance in the pelvis and cause SIJ Dysfunction.
Degenerative joint disease: Degeneration of the joint due to age, wear, and tear can cause SIJ Dysfunction.
Ankylosing spondylitis: This is a type of arthritis that affects the spine, including the SI joint, causing pain and inflammation.
It is essential to consult with a physiotherapist if you suspect you have SIJ Dysfunction to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment.
