Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD)
Being told you have DDD can feel alarming — but it doesn’t have to mean a lifetime of limitations. Disc degeneration is a natural part of aging, and with the right expert guidance, most people return to full, active lives. At Alleviate Physiotherapy, we move you past the scary terminology and into a results-driven recovery.
Of people with zero back pain show disc changes on imaging — degeneration alone doesn't define your pain.

Sessions to identify bias
Our clinical assessment quickly establishes whether you need extension or flexion-based treatment.

McKenzie certified
Our therapists are trained in the McKenzie Technique — a gold-standard approach for discogenic pain.
Why imaging alone doesn't tell the full story
Radiology reports that mention disc protrusions or narrowing can look frightening — but imaging findings often don't correlate with your actual pain level. Our therapists perform a clinical diagnostic triage to determine whether your pain is truly discogenic, facet-related, or from another source entirely.
Diagnostic Triage
We assess your full movement pattern, symptom behavior, and neurological status — not just your scan — to find the true source of your pain.
Avoiding the Wrong Treatment
Without expert assessment, patients often spend weeks treating the wrong problem. Our triage ensures every technique is matched precisely to your condition.
Extension vs. Flexion Bias
There is no one-size-fits-all stretch for back pain. The direction of movement that relieves your symptoms is a critical clinical decision — and getting it wrong can worsen your condition.
For disc-related issues
Extension exercises reduce intradiscal pressure and help "centralize" your pain — moving symptoms from your leg back toward your lower spine, which is a positive sign of recovery.
For spinal stenosis
When degeneration has led to canal narrowing (stenosis), leaning forward actually creates more space for compressed nerves — making flexion-based movement the correct approach.
Performing repetitive forward bending with an active disc herniation — as many generic "home workout" routines suggest — can significantly increase intradiscal pressure and worsen your symptoms. Professional direction is essential before starting any exercise program.
How we treat DDD at Alleviate
Our approach combines specialized assessment, targeted movement therapy, and progressive stabilization — designed to get you back to lifting, sport, and daily life without fear of reinjury.
McKenzie Technique
We assess for "centralization" — a rapid shift of pain from your limbs toward your spine. This is a powerful indicator of a good prognosis. Without professional guidance, the opposite (peripheralization) can occur, increasing nerve pressure further down the leg.
Lumbar Stabilization — Building Your Internal Corset
Once pain is controlled, we teach co-contraction of deep stabilizing muscles to create a "corseting effect" around the spine. This neutral spine position is your platform for safely returning to all activities.
Incremental Aerobic Conditioning
Prolonged bed rest is harmful and linked to long-term disability. We provide a structured, progressive aerobic program that keeps you safely moving — maintaining conditioning while the disc heals.
Return to Activity Planning
We don't just treat your acute episode — we build a personalized roadmap for returning to sports, lifting, and daily life with a resilient, well-supported spine.
Expert Care You Can Trust
Evidence-Based Treatment
Every technique we use is grounded in current clinical research — not generic advice or one-size-fits-all protocols.
Specialized Movement Assessment
McKenzie-certified therapists identify your movement direction preference in the first session — the foundation of everything that follows.
Long-Term Stabilization
We build lasting resilience — not just short-term relief — through deep muscle training and return-to-activity progression.
