Work Hardening Program
Returning to work after a workplace injury is not only about curing pain but also about regaining confidence, strength and ability to perform tasks.
Usually, many people stop taking physiotherapy sessions after their pain has been reduced, but they struggle with lifting, bending, lessen mobility and poor endurance.
This is when work hardening program becomes important.
What is a work hardening program?
It is an advanced rehabilitation program designed specifically to prepare individuals to meet their job’s demands both physical and mental. It focuses on
- increasing muscle mobility
- building endurance
- simulation activities
How does the treatment go?
The treatment program is designed for 8 weeks to help you regain strength, increase mobility and gain full functional ability. On your initial visit, the Healthcare provider will do the assessment and plan the initial stage of your personal care program. The assessment includes, overview of complete medical history, physical examination, posture examination and mobility testing. This information helps therapist develop a customized program that will target your work demands.
As your ability improves, the program is gradually intensified to match the real physical and mental demands of your workplace. By the end of the program, you will have developed the physical capacity, confidence, and skill set needed to return to work safely and effectively.
Who Needs a Work Hardening Program?
The inclusion criteria for the program includes individuals:
- recovering from workplace injuries
- returning to physically demanding jobs
- experiencing difficulty keeping up with work duties after injury
- who have risk of re-injury
- who need gradual exposure back into full job responsibilities
Whether your job involves manual labor, prolonged standing, repetitive movements, or heavy lifting, work hardening helps you return stronger, safer, and more prepared.
Why Is Work Hardening So Important?
- Because rehabilitation alone is not enough.
- Pain reduction does not always equal work readiness.
- Work hardening acts as the bridge between the clinic and real life โ transforming recovery into full functional movements. It minimizes the risks of re-injury, improves long-term outcomes, and supports a confident return to work.
At Alleviate Physiotherapy, we help patients regain their strength, mobility and educate patients to reduce the re-risk of getting injured. If you’re ready to move a step ahead in attaining your goals, our work hardening program will guide you in every way possible.
