What is Trigger Finger?
Trigger finger, also known as stenosing tenosynovitis, is a condition that affects the tendons in the fingers or thumb, causing them to become inflamed or irritated. This inflammation can cause the tendon sheath (the protective covering around the tendon) to thicken and narrow, making it difficult for the tendon to glide smoothly through the sheath. As a result, the affected finger or thumb may become stuck in a bent or straight position, and may make a snapping or popping sound when moved.
The exact cause of trigger finger is not always clear, but it is more common in people who perform repetitive gripping motions( common at the workplace with repetitive lifting, pushing or pulling) or who have certain medical conditions, such as diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis. Women and men over the age of 40 are also more likely to develop the condition.
What are the symptoms of Trigger Finger?
The symptoms of trigger finger may include:
- Pain or discomfort in the affected finger or thumb
- Stiffness in the affected finger or thumb
- A popping or clicking sensation when moving the affected finger or thumb
- Difficulty moving the affected finger or thumb
- A bump or lump at the base of the affected finger or thumb
- Finger or thumb catching or locking in a bent position and then suddenly straightening out, or vice versa
- Finger or thumb stuck in a bent position, requiring manual straightening
Symptoms in case of trigger finger, may be mild at first and gradually worsen over time. In some cases, the affected finger or thumb may become stuck in a bent or straight position and may require manual manipulation to move. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to see a physiotherapist near you for accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

How can Physiotherapy help?
Physiotherapists as a primary care provider provide effective treatment options for recovering from trigger finger. A physiotherapist after thorough examination can develop an individualized treatment plan to address the underlying causes of the condition and to help improve range of motion and flexibility in the affected finger or thumb. Here are some ways in which physiotherapy can help:
- Hand Exercises: A physiotherapist can teach specific Neuromuscular exercises to help stretch and strengthen the muscles and tendons in the hand and fingers, which help to improve range of motion and prevent future flare-ups of trigger finger.
- Modalities: Modalities such as Laser, heat or ice therapy may be used to help reduce pain and inflammation.
- Splinting or Taping: In some cases, a splint or brace may be recommended to immobilize the affected finger or thumb, allowing the tendon sheath to rest and heal.
- Ergonomic Modifications: If trigger finger is related to a repetitive strain injury or overuse, a physiotherapist can suggest modifications to workstations, tools, or equipment to help reduce the strain on the hand and fingers.
- Education: Physiotherapists provide education on proper hand and finger positioning and movements, as well as how to perform tasks in a way that reduces strain on the hands and fingers.
