What are Labral Tears?
Labral tears are a type of injury that affects the labrum, which is a piece of cartilage that surrounds the socket of a joint. The labrum provides cushioning and stability to the joint, and when it is torn, it can cause pain, limited mobility, and instability in the affected joint.
Labral tears can occur in several different joints, but they are most common in the shoulder and hip. In the shoulder, labral tears are often the result of a traumatic injury or repetitive overhead motions, such as those performed in sports like baseball or volleyball or workplace Injury.
Symptoms of a labral tear can include pain, stiffness, clicking or popping sounds, a feeling of instability or weakness in the joint(very common), and reduced range of motion. Treatment for labral tears can vary depending on the severity of the injury, and guided physiotherapy is one of the most effective ways of rehabilitating from a labral tear.
What are the symptoms of a labral tear in the shoulder?
Shoulder pain has many myths and misconceptions surrounding it. Read more about them in our blog “Half Truths about Shoulder Pain”.
The symptoms of a labral tear can vary depending on the location of the tear and the severity of the injury, but some common symptoms include:
Pain: The most common symptom of a labral tear is pain, which is typically felt deep within the joint. The pain may be sharp or dull and can be aggravated by certain movements or activities.
Stiffness: Stiffness is another common symptom of a labral tear, which may make it difficult to move the affected joint.
Clicking and Popping Sounds: Some people may experience clicking or popping sounds in the joint when they move, which can be a sign of a labral tear.
Weakness/Instability: A labral tear does make the affected joint feel weak or unstable, making it difficult to perform certain movements or activities.
Reduced Range of Motion: A labral tear does limit the range of motion(mobility) of the affected joint, making it difficult to move the joint through its full range.
It's important to note that most labral tears do cause symptoms. If you suspect that you may have a labral tear, it's important to see a physiotherapist near you for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plans.

Manual Therapy: We use techniques such as joint mobilization,MFR, MET, ART,IASTR, Cupping therapy and other soft tissue massage, and stretching to help improve joint range of motion and flexibility.
Strengthening Exercises: Graded Individualize Strengthening exercises (combination of Isometric, Concentric, Eccentric, particularly for the rotator cuff muscles, plays a very important and vital role in improving shoulder stability and reducing the risk of further injury.
Posture Correction: Poor posture is one of the most common causes of undue stress on the shoulder joint, exacerbating a labral tear. Our therapists teach proper posture techniques to help alleviate stress on the shoulder.
Functional Training: Functional training involves exercises that mimic daily activities or sports movements. These exercises can help improve shoulder function and prepare the joint for more advanced activities.
