What is Neuro Physiotherapy?
Neuro physiotherapy, also known as neurological physiotherapy, is a type of physiotherapy that focuses on the management and rehabilitation of individuals with neurological conditions. These conditions can include conditions that affect the brain, such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, or multiple sclerosis, as well as conditions that affect the spinal cord, such as spinal cord injury or cerebral palsy.
Neuro physiotherapy aims to help individuals with neurological conditions to regain as much function and independence as possible. Our physiotherapist will work with the client to assess their physical abilities and limitations and create a personalized treatment plan to address the client’s specific needs. We use a variety of techniques for the same including:
- Exercise: The physiotherapist will design a specific exercise program tailored to the patient's condition and goals. The exercises may focus on strengthening, stretching, and conditioning the affected muscles and joints.
- Manual Therapy: This includes techniques such as PNF, mobilization, manipulation, and massage, which are used to improve the range of motion and function of the affected joints and muscles.
- Neurodevelopmental Techniques: These techniques are used to help patients with neurological conditions to improve their coordination, balance, and posture, and to relearn activities of daily living such as walking, dressing, or eating.
- Modalities: The physiotherapist may use various modalities to help reduce pain, inflammation, and muscle spasms, such as heat and cold therapy, massages, and dry needling.
-
Education and Advice: We provide clients with education and advice on injury prevention, self-management, and the use of assistive devices such as crutches or braces.
Read more about Braces - Reassessment: We believe in regular updates and our physiotherapists will regularly reassess your progress and adjust the treatment plan as needed.
Neuro physiotherapy typically requires multiple sessions, and the frequency and duration of treatment will depend on your condition and goals. All our expert physiotherapists work closely with the patient to set realistic goals and monitor progress as needed to ensure the best possible treatment outcomes.
What conditions can be treated with Neuro Physiotherapy?
Neuro physiotherapy can be used to treat a wide range of neurological conditions, including:
- Stroke: A stroke is a serious medical condition that occurs when the blood supply to the brain is interrupted. Our therapists can help stroke patients to regain strength, coordination, and mobility in the affected limbs.
- Traumatic Brain Injury: A traumatic brain injury (TBI) can cause a wide range of physical, cognitive, and emotional symptoms. Neuro physiotherapy can help TBI patients to improve their balance, coordination, and mobility, as well as to relearn activities of daily living.
- Multiple Sclerosis: MS is a chronic disease that affects the central nervous system. Neuro physiotherapy can help MS patients to improve their balance, coordination, and mobility, as well as to manage symptoms such as fatigue and spasticity.
- Spinal Cord Injury: A spinal cord injury can cause a wide range of physical, cognitive, and emotional symptoms. Neuro physiotherapy can help spinal cord injury patients to regain strength, coordination, and mobility in the affected limbs, as well as to manage symptoms such as pain and spasticity.
- Cerebral Palsy: CP is a group of neurological disorders that affect movement and muscle tone. Neuro physiotherapy can help CP patients to improve their coordination, balance, and mobility, as well as to manage symptoms such as spasticity.
- Bell’s Palsy: Bell's palsy is a sudden onset, unilateral (affecting one side of the face) facial weakness or paralysis that is caused by inflammation of the facial nerve. The facial nerve controls the muscles of the face and is responsible for movements such as smiling, frowning, and closing the eyes.
- Parkinson's Disease: Parkinson's is a progressive disorder of the nervous system that affects movement. Neuro physiotherapy can help Parkinson's patients to improve their balance, coordination, and mobility, as well as to manage symptoms such as rigidity and tremors.
Other conditions such as spinal cord compression, Guillain-Barre syndrome, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Huntington's disease, and many others, can also benefit from neuro physiotherapy.
It's worth noting that some conditions may be more challenging to treat than others and the outcome may vary depending on the severity, stage, and duration of the condition. Our physiotherapists will work closely with the patient to set realistic goals and monitor progress as needed to ensure the best possible outcome.
