Pelvic Floor Muscle Tightness
How does physiotherapy helps?
For pelvic floor problems, if you’ve ever been told to do pelvic muscles strengthening exercises but your symptoms become worse, then you’re not alone. For most of the people the cause is not muscle weakness, it’s muscle tightness.
Pelvic floor muscle tightens, also known as Hypertonic Pelvic floor, is a common condition in which people experience pain, bladder or bowel movements issues, and issues with sexual activity.
How does this condition occur?
The muscles in pelvic floor works in a similar manner like any other muscle in our body. The muscles contract and relax. However, stress, pain, or trauma can cause these muscles to be stuck in a constant state of tension- just like clenching your jaw all day without noticing.
Causes of pelvic floor tightness:
- Chronic stress or anxiety
- Overdoing core exercises or Kegels
- Pain, injury or surgery
- Pelvic or bladder conditions like endometriosis, painful bladder symptoms, irritable bowel syndrome
Common symptoms:
- Pelvic pain or pressure
- Pain with intercourse, penetration or ejaculation
- Difficulty urinating or urinary urgency
- Constipation or straining with bowel movement
- Tailbone, hip, lower back or groin pain
How does physiotherapy help?
- Assessment: Pelvic floor physiotherapist evaluates muscle tone, ability of muscles to relax and contract, muscle coordination and posture.
- Muscle Relaxation: The therapy focuses on guided pelvic floor relaxation to reduce pain and pressure and ease urinary/bowel symptoms.
- Manual Therapy: The therapist will work on the muscles internally and externally, with consent, to release trigger points, reduce muscle knots, improve blood flow, and decrease nerve sensitivity.
Along with this, physiotherapists help healing both physically and neurologically. The therapist helps in reducing pain signals, teaching safe movement and improving sense of control.
