What is Mechanical Back Pain?
Mechanical back pain is caused by issues with the spineโs structure or function, including muscles, ligaments, and nerves. Mechanical back pain often results from problems like:
- Poor Posture: Prolonged periods of sitting or standing in a position that puts strain on the back can cause mechanical back pain.
- Herniated Discs: Herniated discs occur when the gel-like center of a spinal disc bulges out and puts pressure on the nerve roots, causing pain.
- Degenerative Disc Disease: This condition occurs when the spinal discs begin to deteriorate, leading to pain and stiffness.
- Spinal Stenosis: Spinal stenosis occurs when the spinal canal narrows, putting pressure on the spinal cord and nerves and causing pain.
- Sciatica: Sciatica is a type of mechanical back pain that occurs when the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back to the legs, becomes compressed or irritated.
- Facet Joint Pain: The facet joints are small joints located in the back of the spine that can become painful due to arthritis, injury, or degeneration.
Mechanical back pain varies in severity and may include tingling, numbness, or leg weakness. Physical therapy or a chiropractor should be your first contact for a detailed examination to identify the root cause. Seeing a physiotherapist or chiropractor is crucial for proper diagnosis and treatment.
