Bunions
What are Bunions?
Bunions are a common foot condition that affects the joint at the base of the big toe. They develop when the bone or tissue at the joint shifts out of place, causing the big toe to lean towards the other toes. This can cause a bony bump to form at the base of the big toe.
There are many reasons that can cause Bunions including genetics, wearing shoes that are too tight, and certain foot conditions such as flat feet or arthritis. Symptoms of bunions can include pain, swelling, redness, and stiffness and they can worsen over time. In some cases bunions can also lead to difficulty walking or finding comfortable shoes.
What are the symptoms of Bunions?
- A bulging bump at the base of the big toe
- Pain or soreness around the joint of the big toe that worsens with pressure or wearing shoes
- Swelling or redness around the affected joint
- Stiffness or limited movement of the big toe
- Corns or calluses on the affected joint or on the adjacent toes
- Changes in the alignment of the toes, such as the big toe turning inward towards the other toes
- Difficulty finding comfortable shoes that fit properly due to the shape of the foot

How can physiotherapy help in treatment of Bunions?
Treatment in case of bunions depends on the severity of the condition. However, physiotherapy centers like ours are the first line of contact for conditions of the feet as physiotherapy plays a helpful role in the treatment of bunions by focusing on reducing pain, improving joint range of motion, and strengthening the muscles around the affected joint. Our physiotherapists work with you to create an individualized treatment plan that may include the following:
- Manual Therapy: We use techniques such as soft tissue mobilization, massage therapy or joint mobilization, to help reduce pain and improve joint mobility.
- Strengthening Exercises: Our physiotherapist will prescribe specific exercises to stretch the muscles and improve flexibility around the affected joint. Strengthening exercises may also be recommended to improve the stability of the foot and ankle.
- Footwear Advice: We provide recommendations and guidance for selecting appropriate footwear that can reduce pressure on the affected joint and improve your comfort.
- Orthotics: We have a range of custom orthotics that may be prescribed as custom-made orthotics, such as shoe inserts, to help redistribute pressure and provide support to the affected joint.
- Gait Analysis: We analyze walking patterns to identify any issues with your gait that may be contributing to the development or worsening of your bunions. We provide exercises or recommendations to help improve your gait based on our initial assessment.
- Taping or Bracing: We use taping or bracing techniques to help support the affected joint and improve your comfort.
Physiotherapy is a tool to improve the symptoms of bunions and slow down their progression. If you are experiencing symptoms of bunions, it is important to seek advice from a physiotherapist near you, who can provide an accurate diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment options based on your specific needs.
