What is MCL Injury?
An MCL injury refers to an injury to the medial collateral ligament (MCL), which is a band of tissue located on the inside of the knee joint. The MCL connects the thigh bone (femur) to the shin bone (tibia) and plays a crucial role in stabilizing the knee and preventing excessive sideways movement.
MCL injuries commonly occur as a result of a direct blow to the outside of the knee, typically during sports activities or accidents. The most common causes include sudden twisting, a forceful impact to the outer side of the knee, or a combination of twisting and impact. MCL injuries often happen in contact sports such as football, soccer, or basketball, where players can experience collisions or awkward landings.
The severity of an MCL injury can vary, ranging from mild sprains to complete tears. The injury is usually classified into three grades:
What are the stages of MCL Injury?
- Grade 1: This is the mildest form, involving a minor stretch or small tear of the ligament. It may cause some pain, but there is typically no significant loss of knee stability.
- Grade 2: This grade indicates a partial tear of the ligament. It may cause moderate pain, swelling, and some instability in the knee joint.
- Grade 3: This is the most severe form, representing a complete tear of the MCL. It causes significant pain, swelling, and instability in the knee. In some cases, other structures of the knee, such as the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), may also be affected.
How can Physiotherapists and Chiropractor help in MCL injuries?
Both physiotherapy and chiropractic care play a vital role in the management and rehabilitation of an MCL injury. While their approaches and techniques may differ, both disciplines aim to promote healing, reduce pain, restore function, and improve overall musculoskeletal health. Here's how physiotherapy and chiropractic care can help in the context of an MCL injury:
Physiotherapy:
- Assessment and Diagnosis: A physiotherapist will assess the extent and severity of the MCL injury, identify any associated impairments or imbalances, and develop an appropriate treatment plan.
- Pain Management: Physiotherapists may use various techniques such as ice, heat, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, or manual therapy to help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation.
- Range of Motion and Strengthening Exercises: Physiotherapists can guide you through specific exercises to improve knee range of motion, strengthen the muscles around the knee joint, and restore stability.
- Manual Therapy: Hands-on techniques like joint mobilization, soft tissue massage, and stretching can be used to promote tissue healing, reduce scar tissue formation, and improve joint mobility.
- Balance and Proprioception Training: Physiotherapists may incorporate exercises to improve balance and proprioception, which are essential for restoring stability and preventing future injuries.
- Functional Rehabilitation: Physiotherapists can help you gradually return to your normal activities or sports through tailored rehabilitation programs, addressing sport-specific movements and activities.
- Education and Prevention: Physiotherapists provide guidance on injury prevention strategies, proper body mechanics, and techniques to minimize the risk of re-injury.

Chiropractic Care:
- Spinal Alignment and Joint Mobilization: Chiropractors focus on the alignment and movement of the spine and other joints. While not directly addressing the MCL injury, optimizing overall joint function can indirectly support the recovery process.
- Soft Tissue Therapy: Chiropractors may use techniques such as active release therapy, myofascial release, or instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization to address any associated muscle imbalances or tightness that may contribute to knee instability or altered biomechanics.
- Rehabilitation Exercises: Chiropractors can prescribe specific exercises to improve strength, flexibility, and stability of the surrounding muscles, which can aid in the recovery from an MCL injury.
- Postural Advice: Chiropractors may provide guidance on proper posture and body mechanics, which can reduce unnecessary stress on the knee joint and facilitate healing.
- Collaborative Care: Chiropractors often work in conjunction with other healthcare professionals, such as physiotherapists, to ensure a comprehensive approach to rehabilitation and injury management.
