What is Dupuytren's Contracture?
Dupuytren's contracture is a condition that affects the hands and fingers, causing one or more fingers to bend towards the palm of the hand and eventually becoming stuck in that position. The condition is caused by the thickening and tightening of the tissue beneath the skin of the palm and fingers, which can lead to the formation of small, hard nodules or cords. Over time, these nodules or cords can contract, causing the fingers to bend and limiting their movement.
Dupuytren's contracture is more common in men than in women and typically affects people over the age of 50. The condition can be mild, with only a slight bend in one finger, or severe, with multiple fingers affected and the hand unable to open fully. It can also be progressive, with the fingers becoming more and more bent over time.
The exact cause of Dupuytren's contracture is not known, but it is thought to be related to genetic and environmental factors. Best Physiotherapy treatments near you are available across all our clinics in Etobicoke, Mississauga and Clarkson (Oakville) that can help to slow its progression and improve hand function.
