What are the causes of Lower Back Pain?
According to the Canadian Chiropractic Association, up to 85% of Canadians will experience lower back pain at some point in their lifetime. It refers to pain or discomfort felt in the lower part of the back, between the hips and the rib cage.
Lower back pain can have many different causes, some of the more common ones are:
- Muscle strain or spasm: This is the most common cause of lower back pain, which occurs when the muscles or ligaments supporting the back are stretched or torn. It can be caused by improper lifting techniques, overuse, or sudden movements.
- Herniated disc: A herniated disc occurs when the soft material inside a spinal disc bulges out and presses on surrounding nerves, causing pain in the lower back. The discs in the spine act as shock absorbers and are a very crucial part of the spine.
- Degenerative disc disease: As people age, the discs in their spine can wear down, causing pain and discomfort in the lower back.
- Osteoarthritis: Osteoarthritis is a condition in which the joints in the lower back wear down, causing pain and stiffness.
- Sciatica / Nerve Compression: Sciatica is a condition in which a herniated disc or other issue in the lower back presses on the sciatic nerve or Nerve roots, causing pain, numbness, or tingling in the lower back and down the legs.
Lower back pain can range from a mild ache to severe and debilitating pain. Treatment for lower back pain will depend on the underlying cause of the pain, and physiotherapy is one of the primary ways in which this pain can be managed and reduced.
